Per quanto concerne il Roman de Brut di Wace, cito dall'edizione nota come Arthurian Chronicles, trad. Eugene Mason (Pennsylvania State University):

Arthur committed the care of his realm, and of Dame Guenevere, his wife, to his nephew, Mordred, a marvellously hardy knight, whom Arthur loved passing well. Mordred was a man of high birth, and of many noble virtues, but he was not true. He had set his heart on Guenevere, his kinswoman, but such a love brought little honour to the queen. Mordred had kept this love close, for easy enough it was to hide, since who would be so bold as to deem that he loved his uncle’s dame? The lady on her side had given her love to a lord of whom much good was spoken, but Mordred was of her husband’s kin! This made the shame more shameworthy. Ah, God, the deep wrong done in this season by Mordred and the queen.

e ancora:

He [Arthur, ndr] was hindered in his hope by Mordred, of whose shame and vileness you shall now hear. This Mordred was the king’s kin, his sister’s very son, and had Britain in his charge. Arthur had given the whole realm to his care, and committed all to his keeping. Mordred did whatever was good in his own eyes, and would have seized the land to his use. He took homage and fealty from Arthur’s men, demanding of every castle a hostage. Not content with this great sin he wrought yet fouler villainy. Against the Christian law he took to himself the wife of the king. His uncle’s queen, the dame of his lord, he took as wife, and made of her his spouse.

Quindi, inizialmente si parla di "alto lignaggio" di Mordred, successivamente si precisa la parentela con Artù (figlio della sorella). Ma non sappiamo il nome di questa sorella di Artù né tantomeno si cita una relazione incestuosa del re. Ho volutamente inserito nei brani citati anche il riferimento al rapporto fra Mordred e Ginevra... :D

Sì, confermo: anche nella versione "originale" del ciclo vulgato è così (ho fatto riferimento all'edizione della Brewer curata da Norris Lacy).

Citazione tratta da un racconto del Mabinogion, noto come Il sogno di Ronabwy. Si tratta della prima parte del dialogo fra Ronabwy e Iddawc:

"Non vi nasconderò il mio lignaggio: sono Iddawc figlio di Mynyo; non sono noto per il mio nome bensì per il mio soprannome"

"Vorresti dircelo?"

"Sì: sono chiamato Iddawc il Mestatore di Britannia"

"Signore" disse Ronabwy "perché siete chiamato così?"

"Eccone la ragione. Alla battaglia di Camlan io fui uno degli intermediari tra Artù e suo nipote Medrawt. Ero giovane, impetuoso. Per desiderio di battermi, misi tra di loro la discordia. Vi dirò come fu. Quando l'imperatore Artù mi mandò da Medrawt perché io gli ricordassi ch'egli era suo padre adottivo e suo zio, e gli chiedessi di far pace per risparmiare il sangue dei figli di re e di nobili dell'isola di Britannia, Artù ebbe un bel pronunciare davanti a me le parole più affettuose, io riferii a Medrawt le frasi più oltraggiose. Questo mi valse il nome di Iddawc il Mestatore di Britannia. E così fu ordita la battaglia di Camlan."

Dunque, leggo or ora dal saggio "A Companion to the Lancelot-Grail Cycle" (curato da Carol Dover per la Brewer) che:

[...] A good example is the transformation of Mordred, who in the Cycle is no longer Arthur’s nephew, but his incestuous son. There is no mention of this paternity prior to the Cycle, as pointed out by James Douglas Bruce, ‘The Development of the Mort Arthur Theme in Mediaeval Romance,’ Romanic Review, 4 (1913), 403–71. On the same topic see Elizabeth Archibald, ‘Arthur and Mordred: Variations on an Incest Theme,’ Arthurian Literature, 8 (1989), 1–27. One can always find mythical parallels, as in M.Victoria Guérin, ‘The King’s Sin: The Origins of the David-Arthur Parallel,’ in The Passing of Arthur: New Essays in Arthurian Tradition, ed.
